How Financial Literacy Workshops in Charleston, SC, Build Financial Confidence
Financial stability means more than making ends meet. It means having the confidence to manage everyday expenses, prepare for the unexpected, and make informed decisions about the future.
For many individuals and families, knowing where to begin can be one of the biggest challenges.
That's where James Island Outreach is making a difference.
Its Financial Resources Workshop (FRW) Program takes a practical, approachable path to financial education. Rather than overwhelming participants with complicated financial concepts, the program breaks money management into manageable steps.
Financial literacy is the knowledge and ability to make informed decisions about money, including budgeting, saving, managing expenses, and planning for future financial needs.
The Financial Resources Workshop Program turns that knowledge into everyday action.
Two Workshops, One Path Toward Financial Stability
The program offers two connected learning experiences:
FRW 1.0: Achieving Financial Balance. Participants learn how to understand spending habits, organize household expenses, and identify opportunities to strengthen their financial position.
FRW 2.0: Personal Financial Plan. Participants work alongside volunteers to develop a personal budget, account for recurring expenses, and prepare for irregular or unexpected costs.
The second workshop builds on the first, encouraging participants to track their spending and apply what they've learned.
Together, these workshops give residents a starting point and a practical plan for moving forward.

Source: James Island Outreach, 2026 Final Impact Report. Figures cover January through October 2026 and exclude a separate Recovery Center workshop attended by 17 participants.
The program reported that 43.4% of introductory workshop participants had completed FRW 2.0 by October, with additional participants committed to completing the series before year-end.
Those numbers tell an important story, but the real impact comes from what participants take home: new skills, greater confidence, and a plan they can put into action.
One participant shared:
“I can already see lots of things I can cut back on. You really see how $5 here and $10 there can add up very fast!”
It's a simple observation that captures the heart of the program. Small changes, supported by practical knowledge, can make a meaningful difference.
How Community Partnerships Strengthen Financial Education
What makes the Financial Resources Workshop Program especially impactful is the community behind it.
Dedicated volunteers work alongside participants, helping them develop personal financial plans and offering encouragement throughout the process.
Local businesses, churches, nonprofits, and community organizations are also stepping forward to support the program's growth.
The program's expanding network includes:
Chick-fil-A, whose team members have begun participating in financial education workshops.
Baxter-Patrick James Island Library, which has committed to hosting monthly workshop sessions beginning in 2027.
Trident United Way Financial Stability Coalition, which has included the Financial Resources Workshop Program in its coalition referral program.
Charleston Financial Empowerment Center, which provides a connection to ongoing financial counseling.
Town of James Island and James Island Public Service District, which have scheduled six workshops for nearly 100 employees.
Local churches and volunteers, who share program information, support workshop delivery, and encourage community participation.
James Island Outreach has also strengthened its commitment by establishing a full-time Financial Programs Coordinator position to guide the program's continued development.
These partnerships reflect something The ATI Foundation believes deeply: lasting community impact happens when people and organizations work together toward a shared purpose.
Building Financial Confidence Beyond the Classroom
Financial education isn't a one-time conversation. It's an ongoing journey, and James Island Outreach is working to ensure participants have support beyond the classroom.
The organization has introduced volunteer follow-ups, additional educational opportunities, and connections to financial counseling through the Charleston Financial Empowerment Center.
These resources help participants continue building on what they've learned, turning new knowledge into lasting habits.
The program has also responded to challenges identified by participants and volunteers. Because tracking expenses for 30 days can be difficult, volunteers developed a workbook and began offering additional encouragement between sessions.
This approach recognizes that learning new financial habits takes time, consistency, and personal support.
Participants can also connect with the Charleston Financial Empowerment Center, which offers financial counseling through a partnership with Increasing H.O.P.E.
Perhaps one workshop participant said it best:
“Thank you very much for offering this resource, especially the workshop, so I have clear next steps!”
That sense of direction and possibility is exactly what programs like this are designed to create.
