Charleston Workforce Housing Fund Makes First Major Acquisition, Lowering Rents for Local Families

The Charleston Workforce Housing Fund is taking bold steps to make housing more affordable for working families in the Charleston area. On December 29, 2025, the Fund closed on its first acquisition, the West Wind Apartments in West Ashley. This milestone marks the beginning of a new chapter in workforce-focused housing solutions.

With this acquisition, the Fund immediately lowered rents for qualified tenants by $275 to $475 per month below prevailing market rates. Additionally, a percentage of the apartments are now reserved for households that meet established income thresholds, ensuring that the benefits reach the families who need them most.

Looking ahead, a $1 million renovation is set to begin in February 2026, improving both the quality and livability of the community. Beyond physical upgrades, CWHF is prioritizing holistic support: Ascent Housing is partnering with Trident United Way to provide a Family Coach on-site, connecting residents to essential services and guidance.

This initiative is a powerful example of what happens when community-focused solutions, strategic partnerships, and decisive action come together to unlock opportunities and improve lives.
